Art, Environment, and Place (HONORS 413 Section 02) is a SDSU undergraduate honors course scheduled for fall of 2010. Stringfellow’s new course focuses on the work of contemporary artists who integrate various field and research strategies borrowed from the natural sciences, geography, and other disciplines within their practice.

The course will be centered around focused readings, discussions, presentations, screenings, and field trips. Students will conceive and execute a final project proposal that may take the form of a hybrid documentary, temporary site-specific artwork or installation, digital multimedia feature, performance, text, or other work that addresses social, cultural, environmental, geographical, and/or political issues of a local or regional ecology, site, or subject. Special emphasis will be placed on projects that are collaborative, incorporate sustainable design strategies, promote environmental awareness through education, and/or directly encourage audience participation. Projects, possibly collaborative in nature, will be distilled, executed, and documented at the conclusion of the course. A background in art is not required to take this course. Students from all academic and disciplinary areas are encouraged to apply.

The course will culminate in an immersive three-day weekend field study workshop at the Salton Sea scheduled for the weekend of November 19 – 21, 2010. During this workshop students will be able to directly experience and respond to place over an embedded field research period. Visiting artist/architect, Chris Taylor, director of Land Arts of the American West at Texas Tech, will join the student group for this weekend field experience. Students will be prepared before embarking on the field trip through readings and presentations on diverse topics related to the site including but not limited to regional water politics, agricultural/real estate economies, local ecologies, military presence, tourism, outsider art, fringe subcultures among others. A culminating art exhibit and publication will be organized to document student interdisciplinary projects resulting from this course and workshop.

Visit the course Web site and blog at: http://kimstringfellow.wordpress.com/ for more information.

The Center for Cultural Innovation (CCI) today announced twenty?six artists who received funding in the fifth round of funding under its Investing in Artists grants program, which is designed to build the personal and creative capacity of California’s artists working in all disciplines. Kim Stringfellow received an Investing in Artists grant in the Round V Artistic Equipment and Tools category.

The Investing in Artists grants program was established by the Center for Cultural Innovation (CCI) in 2007 to enhance the working lives and strengthen the creative support system for California artists working in all disciplines. Following three initial rounds of funding made to 54 artists in 2007 and 2008, CCI was able to expand the program which will now make $1 million in new grants to artists from 2009-2011, supported by The James Irvine Foundation and The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.

Round V of the Investing in Artists grants program specifically provided support to working artists in the Visual Arts, Craft and Literary Arts in two categories: 1) for the acquisition of Artistic Equipment & Tools; and 2) for Artistic Innovation. New grant awards to California artists for Round V of the Investing in Artists grants program totaled $200,000. For more information about the program or to read the Round V press release, please visit: www.cciarts.org/.

I will be leading an artist-led exhibition walkthrough for the New Topographics exhibit at LACMA on Sunday, December 6th at 2 pm. Please meet at the front of the exhibit in BCAM on the 2nd floor if you would like to attend. The event is free with paid admission, tickets required (available one hour before the program).

New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape is “a restaging of the landmark exhibition first seen in 1975 at the International Museum of Photography, George Eastman House. “New Topographics” signaled the emergence of a new photographic approach to landscape: romanticization gave way to cooler appraisal, focused on the everyday built environment and more attuned to conceptual concerns of the broader art field. More than two-thirds of the photographs by the original ten participants—Robert Adams, Lewis Baltz, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Joe Deal, Frank Gohlke, Nicholas Nixon, John Schott, Stephen Shore, and Henry Wessel, Jr.—are displayed.”
